Sustainable development potential for the Bahamas

Can islands be sustainable? If so, what opportunities do they have? Our assignment given by a client was to explain in general terms what is sustainable development, look around the world for some good examples and then turn the focus on the Bahamas and report on the social, environmental and economic status quo.

The result was The Bahamas and Sustainable Development report: 45 pages covering everything from definitions of sustainability and eco tourism to the country profile of the Bahamas from the Johannesburg Summit 2002 on Sustainable Development.

One aspect of sustainable tourism not mentioned in our report deals with the notion of place branding. The Bahamas has become one of the most iconic branded islands in the world. If you haven’t seen their logo, designed by Minneapolis-based Duffy & Partners, check it out.
